GMAIL moves INBOX to trash

I'm looking for a GMAIL and/or smartphone expert to help us solve a problem. Occasionally, we have lost all of our GMAIL INBOX messages. Sometimes, they go to TRASH and other times we have found them in ALL MAIL. Here is the setup: Windows 7 Home, IMAP enabled, Samsung Galaxy smartphone also can access GMAIL. We also have an old email POP account which forwards email to GMAIL. However, I have eliminated it as the culprit since most all incoming email now is addressed to the GMAIL account. There are two IMAP "Labels" in the label list which I think are left over from my conversion of Outlook Express to GMAIL. I don't know if they need to be there or not.
Our last occurence was yesterday evening. After we noticed that there were NO INBOX messages (and there were over 20 there within the last 30 minutes), I happened to look at the GMAIL account and noticed that apparently the Samsung smartphone had accessed the account. We looked at the smartphone and found all of the GMAIL INBOX messages on the smartphone. However, they should not have been deleted from the GMAIL Inbox or at least I don't think so.
Can anyone help us configure both the GMAIL account and the SAMSUNG interace to GMAIL so that this doesn't happen again? Thank you.
