If you're not getting the 2-second blue "www.dell.com" banner right after the post screen, that would indicate the Dell MBR is messed up. Without the Dell MBR, you can't start the recovery process with Ctrl+F11 (which has to be pressed prior to that blue 'dell.com' banner appearing).

If you have a drivers and utilities disk, you should be able to boot from that, then drop to a command line, CD to the MD2 subdir on the drivers and utils disk, and run the batch file contained there. Besides fixing the Dell MBR so MediaDirect will work from the MediaDirect button (if your laptop has one), it fixes the Dell MBR so their recovery partition works, too.

There is also some good info by Dan Goodell available, if you'd like to better understand how the recovery partition works... and he has written a util (DSRFIX) that can often help repair the Dell MBR if you don't have a drivers & utilities CD, or the CD you have doesn't contain the MD2 subdir (and ergo its MBR repair batch file). http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.shtml
