Reboot Strategy Citrix

If users are connected to the CItrix Environment using the Published apps (Xenapp 6.5 , WI 5.4)

And we reboot the WI server , What will happen to the current sessions.

2. IF we reboot the Data Collector Server , while the sessions are already established. What will happen to the Existing connections

1. When you reboot the citrix WI server, Sessions will be in active state. if you enabled load balanced with with web interface url then users can launch the new applications. If not load balanced then users need to wait for the WI server to come up and running to launch the applications.

2. When you reboot the data collector server, Sessions will be in active state. if you added multiple servers in web interface url then users can launch the new applications.  Once you reboot the data collector then the election process starts and the next server in the list will be selected as a new data collector. If not load added then users need to wait for data collector server to come up and running to launch the applications.

How much Time does it take for election of data collector . Wheni rebooth 1 of the Data collectors ,(We have 2)
I tried to launch the application and It failed .

On the Web Interface Server i saw events like:

Site path: C:\inetpub\wwwroot\Citrix\XenApp.

An error occurred when connecting to the Citrix server to access the  resource. Verify that the server is running and that the network is functioning. This error was reported for an XML Service at address http://SERVER102:8080/scripts/wpnbr.dll [com.citrix.xml.NFuseProtocol.RequestAddress].  [Unique Log ID: 911cf6ff]

Another Question: Can i add another web Interface Server now (we just have 1 WI Server)

1) Nothing will happen to the current sessions. But, they will not open any new applications from the Web Interface.
2) If the sessions are existing on the Data Collector server, then the sessions will be disconnected.

Yes you can add one more webinterface server and you can use F5 load balancer or any other to tool to create a new url to configure load balanced url.

the election can triggered by a citrix server once primary data collector is down. Did you added both the data collectors in web interface serer? Check this URL http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xenapp6-w2k8-admin/ps-console-zones-config-v2.html

Lets see what we can do . We have NetScalers so can utilize them

If you have NetScalers then you shouldn't worry at all about load balancing because they use an intelligent algorithm for load balancing the configured servers within.

One more thing I would like to add. Best practices is to configure the XML brokers in your web interface to be your data collectors. If this is not the case then even after the election process promotes another server to a data collector you will still not be able to launch any further applications as your web interface will obviously, thinking that the first data collector is the only XML broker, still see the first data collector down. Have you had the web interface configured with both your data collectors as XML brokers you would have not faced this problem.

We have both servers configured as the XML Brokers. Unfortunately we still experienced that Issue.

Also at present we only have one Windows based Citrix Web Interface 5.4 server

There is an option of adding webInterface in NetScalers
Can i add one there and then It can load balance.

Just to confirm, rebooting WebInterface did not cause existing sessions any issue.
And Rebooting the Data collector didnt cause any issue either.

Once a session is established, it's about client machine and the server that the user is connected to. So restarting the webinterface will not cause any problem to the existing sessions. But if the datacollector is also part of application delivery and those users connected to that server will get dropped. Also if the same datacollector (down one) is also a xml broker server then you may experience problem until the next xml broker is reached. In that case, new users may experience problems. If you do not have above scenari is true  then session will remain active.

I am not a NetScaler expert but as far as I can remember you need to configure them to load balance. It is not restricted for load balancing Citrix products only; you can load balance any non-Citrix products as well like for example Exchange servers, Sharepoint servers etc.
