Is there a report that shows how much potential savings you would gain by turning on de-duplication?  Would that be show via their free Config Advisor tool?

    Accepted Solution

Config advisor would not assist you with this and I don't believe there are any tools to show what you would save but here's what we've seen in the field

    CIFS - 25% to 50%
    Exchange - 5%
Virtual Machines (general) 30% to 60%

Typically we don't run it on Exchange but on CIFS/NFS/Virtual Machines we see the greatest savings.  If you're using any of these volumes for backups (where only a fraction would be different block level we see up 80%)

This is where Netapp stands out in front of EMC VNX (file level dedupe only) and other technologies since most SANs require up to 100% of extra storage when running snapshots and can only thin provision with no deduplication
