Double click not working to open files in OS X Lion Macbook Pro

Hi,

I recently upgraded the director of the companies MacBook Pro to OS X Lion, unfortunately now double clicking to open files from the desktop or Finder now does not work. single clicking seems to work fine to select files or open programs. I have tried 5 mice that work fine on other computers, the MacBook Pro's track pad and tried both blue tooth and wired USB mice.

I have:
1) Reset PRAM
2) Booted up in safe boot
3) Repaired permissions using the disk utility
4) Checked settings with my computer like for like which is running the same operating system.
5) Made sure the system is completely up to date using software update OS X version 10.7.4

I have no idea what else I could do other than completely rebuild the computer and do a fresh install of Lion.
