Exchange catalogdata folder. Its' become large. How to reduce the size?

hi guys

I'm using Exchange 2007 SP3. The folder 'Catalogdata', is around 20Gb. I'd like to reduce the size of this file as it's affecting the amount of space I have left on there.

How can I do this?

How big is the database? CatalogData folder should be about 5% of DB size.

You can stop msftesql-exchange (net stop msftesql-exchange) and then delete CatalogData folder and it will be recreated when you restart the search services.

Best to do the above at night time so you give the database time to be reindexed.

If all your users are cached mode then you can set indexenabled:$false on the database then the CatalogData folder wont grow.

Jotting down the point to be followed in the process of working on the CatalogData file issue. Do update me with the Status once you have performed these steps. You can also mail me in case you have any Queries regarding the process.

1. Exchange Management Console shows the Database as “Mounted” and StorageGroupCopy Status as “Healthy”.

2. Check and note down the Size of the Mailbox DB and CatalogData folder size on both Active and Passive node.

3. Firstly we are going to “Suspend” the StorageGroupCopy for “Server\SG\MailboxDatabase” (Active Node).

4. Secondly will stop the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer.

5. Then move the CatalogData folders from the original Location to some other network location.

6. Now Start the Search Indexer Service.

7. Perform the same task (4, 5, & 6) on both the Active and Passive Node.

8. Once check the Folder size as it will take some time for the Search Indexer service to populate the CatalogData for the Mailbox Database.

9. Now Resume the StorageGroupCopy for “Server\SG\MailboxDatabase” (Active Node).

10. During this time we might have some logs generated on the ActiveNode and queue in the CopyQueueLength.

Or you can reset all your CatalogData folders on the server with "resetSearchIndex.ps1 -force -all"

Okay, I followed MegaNuk3's advice. I've deleted the catalog data folder. I've now started the services.

However, I don't see a 'Catalogdata' folder recreated. Does that take time?

I cut it from its location to another location.

I also ran the ReserSearchIndex.ps1.

Okay, all is sorted and good now. The catalogdata folder appeared moments ago.
