It could be the battery; does it ever do it when plugged in?

Zip your last 3 *.dmp files (usually located in C:\Windows\Minidump, a hidden directory), and attach that zip file with your next comment.

Reasons:

1. Thermal
2. Power issues as suggested in the above post.
3. Power settings (review Windows and third party power managers for suspend and like activities).
3. Malware.
4. Rootkit malware (very tricky)
5. Operating system corruption (start by running System File Checker:  SFC /SCANNOW)

Does it go through a shutdown process or just start booting?

make sure Automaticall reboot is disabled in System Advanced Properties

Do you have a good restore point (System Restore can do wonders in these cases)?  If not, do you have the windows xp original disk or license key?  We can jump through a lot of hoops here to see if you have malware or some hardware problem, but at the end of the day it really comes down to your data... do you have really important files on your machine with no back up of them else where?  That will tell us how many hoops we will need to jump through or if we can take a simpler brute force approach.

Post those minidump files I mentioned. You are probably having BSOD's which happen too fast to notice.

Laptops flex and motherboard can crack (traces or solder joints crack).  You can sometimes re-ball a motherboard, but it the machine is old enough, it may simply be time for a new laptop.

>>  it reboots after 20 to 30 mins.  << this can be caused by overheating
install speedfan, and monitor the temps :   http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

if overheating, clean out all fans an vents

Maybe the restore point worked for him.  I think I just got lucky...still it's not everyday that a Guru gets all the points when 2 Savants and a Genius are in play.  Wow!  I feel like I need to check to see if gravity still works.  Did that really just happen?!

Yes, of course.  It also makes EE's knowledge base better.
