I've been using PaperPort for many years:

It comes in two editions - Standard and Professional. The latest version is 14. Here's a comparison matrix of the two editions:

For most folks, the Standard edition is fine, and the street price is generally in the $40-50 range. Amazon currently has it for just $30:

I have numerous copies of both PP14 Std and PP14 Pro (running in both XP/32-bit and W7/64-bit), all working very well. I have limited experience with QuickScan Pro (used it in a sandbox just to test some ISIS drivers, not for production), but that brief experience tells me that PaperPort is at least as robust as QuickScan Pro, perhaps even more so. I find that most complaints about PaperPort are due to (1) improper setup/configuration, (2) poor Nuance technical support, and/or (3) inadequate hardware to run the program. Experts Exchange, as well as free Google and Yahoo user groups, along with the new Nuance PaperPort forum, can help with the first two problems – for the third problem, just be sure you have a reasonably modern computer with decent CPU, memory, and hard disk. The scanning manager portion of PaperPort will work with any scanner that has an ISIS, TWAIN, or WIA driver (the rest of the product doesn't care about the scanner – will work with anything). The Fujitsu fi Series scanners have ISIS and/or TWAIN drivers, although not on all operating systems. Here's a table of the ISIS and TWAIN driver downloads for the entire fi Series:

The table doesn't show an fi-4162c2, and a Google search for Fujitsu fi-4162c2 comes up empty, so I'm guessing that isn't the correct model number. But whatever it really is, as long as that table shows an ISIS or TWAIN driver available for your OS, PaperPort will work with it. Regards, Joe

There is no trial available afaik. Here are two choices:

    (1) Purchase it at the Nuance online store for $49.99:

They have a 30-day, money-back, no-questions-asked guarantee, which I know for a fact that they honor. It is available here as both an electronic download and a boxed shipment for the same price (and with the same money-back guarantee).

    (2) Purchase it at Amazon for $29.99:

Generally speaking, Amazon has an excellent return policy, although I don't know what it is for software that you simply don't like. It is available here only as a boxed shipment.
