Best database or method for HA, LB and fault tolerance

What database big companies use when they have to depend on open source to accomplish the following?.

1. High Availability
2. Fault Tolerance/Auto Failover
3. Load Balancing

We are using Ubuntu and MySQL as database. I tried MySQL master-master & master-slave replication and each has some disadvantages and also the MySQL Cluster.

I am looking for best open source database(or the best method of all) for busy web applications which big companies use to achieve High Availability, Auto Failover and Load Balancing.

Your inputs help me a lot in taking best decision. Thank you all!

just my few cents worth here, when we work with large companies, with large databases, they do not usually consider or use Open Source Software to support their large databases.

They select Oracle db on Oracle Enterprise Linux.

Hi!

Other than MySQL there is PostgreSQL

http://www.postgresql.org/
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.1/static/high-availability.html

However if the data is huge and "mission critical" for a large companies I would suggest using either Oracle, DB2 or SQL Server (depending on the application) with support in case you get severe db issues.

Using open source db then you are mostly on your own and have to solve issues yourself (using your knowledge and/or Google ).

I'll give a try of the PostgreSQL. Does it really handle HA, LB, and especially auto failover?
