desktop specs on headphone/microphone

some desktops have this 2 round connectors infront of their machines.

"Front I/O includes dedicated headphone output, and a microphone/headphone jack"
the connector that is a microphone/headphone means it works as either microphone or headphone?

If I have a combo jack (single connector) of a microphone and headphone, can i plug it in to this port and expect it to work?

Not sure if the system will be able to distinguish between the input/output signals
afaik you cannot use an audio input as output
so i think it won't work
but - you are free to try it

thanks for the comments. I'm looking at this link product, nano plug...
http://mysonicgear.com/personal-audio/earphones/nano-plug-smallest-ear-plug-planet-earth

it has a combo jack and comes with an adapter to split out to 2 ports. on the desktop, when tested for microphone, it is working, when starts to use with applications, it doesn't seem to work for the mic. not sure what is the reason
I don't see a mic on that - just earphones.  It has to have a spec for mic included.
