I am trying to add a webpart that was previously deleted from the page but I get an error message "Cannont Import WebPart" .

How do I fix this?  I can see the custom web part on the Gallery list but I cannot add it to the page.

is this web part working somewhere on another page?
"Cannot load web part" is the common (customizable) error message if SharePoint can not load the artefacts of the web part - most times because either the DLL is not registered as safe, the DLL is missing, wrong assembly versions,...
You may have a look in the SharePoint log:
    C:\Progam Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Logs

Could you perhaps attach the web part XML from the web part gallery?

No this is still an oustanding issue.   This web part was functioning well.  I did not understand that it was linked to an external text file that helped with the calculation so the webpart was always showing the incorrect date.  I deleted the webpart then found the external text file.

When I try to add the web part back to the home page, I get an error.

    Accepted Solution

I found my solution.  I was able to retrieve my webpart from closed webparts and restore it.  Everything is working now.
