wireless backup options

currently, we have a T1 as our main internet line and if that goes down we have a failover that kicks in around 30sec using verizon.  Both lines were down simultaneously today so couldnt access internet at all most of day until up again.  Wanted to know the best way to set up a 3rd failover or internet backup such as a wireless service so users can at least get emails if this ever happens again in the future.  I have seen service providers like verizon and att offer this by giving a wireless access point that can allow internet access.  thanks.

Most large ISP's today have a Cellular Modem that gets a 3G or 4G signal from the air and the box has a standard ethernet port to connect into your network. Verizon has this as you point out and my ISP up here has a similar offering I use in one client where no other internet is available.

So you can do this and it works.

You need to have an account and have it configured. You need to determine some sort of flexible data plan as you do not need it most times, but if you do, the bandwidth requiredment and data requirement may be high.

This is a very do-able backup strategy that just needs a bit of planning.

thanks that sounds like just what we need.

Yes - just be sure to keep expectations in line. You are wanting a low cost (presumably) backup for emergencies and not a full replacement for your T1 or ADSL failover.

Also, you probably want to configure your switching so as to fire it up and connect when needed. I probably would not be inclined for automatic failover; however, you might think differently on this point.

Good luck with your project. .... Thinkpads_User
