I have 3 new drives I'm adding to an existing Poweredge 2900.  I want one of them to be the failsafe drive.  I need instructions on how to add and configure them.

If you have OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) installed, then all you do is insert the drives, go to Storage, PERC, Information/Configuration (link at top of page), then choose Create Virtual Disk from the dropdown menu of available tasks for the controller.  Create your RAID 1 (? with two drives, right?), then go to Storage, PERC, Virtual Disks, and choose Assign Hot Spare from the dropdown for that Virtual Disk.

If you don't have OMSA installed, you can install it here:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats/Product/poweredge-2900?DriverId=30T1C&FileId=2998611390&urlProductCode=False

Download and run to extract the files, then run C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.  Choose Custom and and make sure that Storage Management is installed.  Add yourservername:1311 or yourserveripaddress:1311 to IE's Intranet Zone.

I don't have it installed.  I think I tried to do it a while back but it wasn't so simple.  Is it difficult to install?

No ... just follow my instructions in my previous post ... that "should" be all there is to it.

You can, however, also do this in the CTRL-R utility during POST.  CTRL-R, highlight the controller on the VD MGMT screen, hit F2, Create/New.  You should be given the ability to select (with Space Bar, I believe) the drives you want to configure in your RAID 1, be sure to select the Advanced and Initialize boxes ... during the configuration, I believe it asks you if you want to configure a hot-spare.

I'll try OMSA, first.  I'll post tomorrow after I try it.

Thanks

I can try it remotely if it doesn't require a reboot?

It should not require a reboot on a 2900 running 2008 and can be installed remotely.  (Must be installed on C: however.)
