well, I searched the docs up and down, and could not find something really concrete.
the main issue is that for string data types, you need to know if it would be single-byte characters, multi-byte characters or mixed even, for numerical data types you needed to know what exact data type it is, each data type occupies a different byte size.
so, writing a function yourself is out of question, so I fear the answer is here: not possible
