Dear Experts,

I would like to know your opinions about the framework I should use for an ecommerce site.
My client wants to promote and sell his food business on the internet. I have never made an ecommerce site but I have had some experience working on Drupal and Wordpress but I am not quite sure which one to chose for this project. Could you please give me some advice?

Thanks so much,

    Accepted Solution

I'm biased, but I'll just relay to you what I've heard from my associates. Although WordPress does have e-commerce capabilities, Drupal is the preferred platform. Again, this is just through listening to others' experiences on both sides of the fence.

However, I can say from experience that setting up a Drupal e-com can be either unbelievably easy or crazy-difficult, depending on how customized you want the e-commerce components to be.

Drupal 6 has a few options, but mainly Ubercart is my preferred set of modules there.

Drupal 7 has Drupal Commerce, Ubercart, and all kinds of things that make it much easier to develop overall, but not all of the "extra" modules have been ported from D6 to D7.

There is commercial (quick, paid) support available for Drupal Commerce especially; the Commerce Guys  come to mind

Also note that no e-commerce site that accepts credit cards directly (you enter credit card  info right on the site,  PayPal Standard  is exempt from this) you'll,  of course, need a secure  certificate and a static, dedicated IP address. Those are just the current rules of SSL and have nothing to do with Drupal or WordPress. Just figured I'd throw that in just in case.

Like I said, I'm biased, I  know and work with Drupal daily, but I hear that doing them via WP is not really too great. :)

If you need more advice, or have questions, please post back!
