HTTP ERROR 503 - AppPool won't start for sp Central Admin

We us SP2007 MOSS.
I can start the Central Admin, I get HTTP ERROR 503 when I go to that url in browser.
In the control panel, services, the "Windows SharePoint services administartion" has a status of "started".  I then checked IIS, the app pool for Sharepoint Central Admin shows stopped.  I tried click on Start and then in a couple of minutes it will show status as stopped again.  How to fix this?  Thank you.

also, I did change the System Account password a few months ago. Could this be the problem?

I would suspect that the password change is more than likely the cause
Check which services are running under this account and change them to reflect the new password

    Assisted Solution

Run the below mentioned command with System Account ID and its password and then perform IISRESET. It will start working.
    stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -userlogin <system account ID> -password <password>

    Hope this helps.

Running that comand and IISRESET, would that affect the live Sharepoint sites?  Down time?  Thanks.

    Accepted Solution

Yes, anyone currently using the site(s) would experience downtime while the IIS stop and IIS start ran. Typically a minute or so. Once done then the first visitor to the site(s) would experience slow load while or the .NET dlls are loaded into memory.

So ideal solution is to do it at a quiet time and navigate to the site(s) yourself to "wake them up". Also do a search in order to get that loaded
