SBS 2008 PREMIUM TO SBS 2011 STANDARD and keep the 2008 standard server

I bought 2008 sbs premium . I installed it on 2 servers, One running sbs 2008 and the 2nd running 2008 standard w 2008 sql.

Is it possible to install 2011 sbs standard and continue using my 2nd server . The 2008 standard server w 2008 sql.

No. The second server licenses are tied to SBS 2008 and cannot be split apart and run separately.

Upgrade 2008 SBS to 2011 SBS .

how sure are you. That means I must buy a 2nd server . buy the premium addon for 2011. migrate all my apps which are running on sql which is a big headach. (my current server is still only 2.5 years old) . do you know if microsoft has any info on such a situation.

I am quite sure. It is outlined in the licensing guidelines of the product use guide. SBS 2008 Premium is considered a single product. You cannot keep just parts of it in place. Separating out the second server and SQL license would be as illegal as demoting the main SBS server and keeping it as a member server. It just isn't allowed.

I'll back Cliff up on that. Unfortunately the premium add-on is just that, an add on for your existing 2008 server, even your existing premium CAL's are not usable to access the second server if you remove SBS 2008.
