HP all in one multifunction printer not printing officejet office jet 8600

Any thoughts on this:

HP all in one printer not printing from the windows XP PC it's connected to for the last few months at least/

It makes copies OK (son not completely frozen / not out of ink)
You CAN fax from the PC. the display on the printer says dialing.
The printer control panel in xp says it's ready. If you unplug the USB cable, the fax and printer entries say offline.  then reconnect the printer, and the status for printer and fax say ready.

BUT

If you print to printer / send a test page from printer properties, the que in windows printer conrol panel says 1 then goes to 0.  But printer makes no acknowledgement that a job was sent.

rebooted both printer and PC.

Fax port in windows printer properties says usb 3 and printer is using usb 1.  I am going there in a little while to see if they should both be 1 or 3?

Any other ideas?

Uninstall software drivers and reinstall from add remove programs.

HP makes pretty crummy software for those printers.

I don';t know about your experiences, but that crummy software (anything from HP) can take hours uninstalling and then reinstalling : )

As it turned out,  as mentioned above, the printer was set to usb 1 and fax was set to usb 3.  didn't know initially if that was normal - it talks to 1 device in the AIO on usb 1 and the other on usb3?

put the printer on usb 3 and it started working...

now why the F___  did it change to usb 1!?  Another question for another day.

thanks for your time.
