You find a host that supports PHP and mysql because that it the backend for phpbb.  Most host these days have a script installer that will setup the basic forum in a couple of minutes.  then you go to the PHPBB support site, and find a theme you like.  Install and possible modify the theme.

Then set up the forum with the options you want using the admin control panel.

Finally send an invitation to your friends to visit the site.

BTW, if you have not look at other BB software, you might want to look ad others like myBB and smf to see if there are features that you prefer.  They all do the basics, but there may be features that are more important to you than others.

Hi Guys,

I want something that is simple.  I know that I can manage by myself.   I want to allow the client to upload an avatar or youtube video article or blog.  Any suggestions?

They are all "simple" in theory.  You need to have basic skills in HTML, php and mysql. A working knowledge of how web servers work is helpful.  Most forum software has the necessary options to let you do whatever you would expect to be able to do on a forum, and there are all kinds of addons to extend functionality.

Forums are also relatively easy to integrate into other sites.  There are thousands of sites with a forum used to support other parts of the site, and thousands of forums that have add on sections with articles, script, or videos.  They are really quite flexible and utilitarian, but like anything else on the web; the quality of the site really depends on the technical skills and effort of the site publisher.

I want a solo forum.  I do not want to integrate it into a website.  Is this forum a smf forum?

Making money is difficult.  It takes time, a lot of work, and some luck.  It is no different than any other business.  If you come up with the right idea, find the right market, and deliver a good product, you develop a customer base that will grow.

Thank you.  Can someone help me narrow down a niche in the computer science field?  I am  working on my mba in international business and preparing for my doctorate in Computer Science in emerging media.  I love Java and Alice.  I have experience in HTML, PHP, mySQL, visual studio and all the basics of a computer science degree.

I am finding that a forum that allows for subscriptions are very profitable.  I am willing to work hard to make my dreams come true to working at home from my laptop or computer.

Is this forum a smf forum?

No.  It is custom built and covered by patent.  It uses JAVA and oracle on the backend and has a large staff of engineers supporting the codebase.

The current version (vers 10) took over a year to develop and I was part of a beta test team that spent 3 months finding most of the problems before it went live back in February.

I am finding that a forum that allows for subscriptions are very profitable.

That is one business model.  However most sites do not have content that people are willing to pay for.  This site started out as a free site for the first 4 years.  The initial transition to subscription took a couple of years to be profitable, and the margins are actually quite thin.  With the subscription model you incur additional costs for accounting, customer support and advertising/promotion that are not major factors in an ad based model.

The only reason that tis site can make a profit is because they have a large group of unpaid volunteers delivering the product.  The volunteers are here because we like the community, and that is why this site has survived and been profitable when most of its competitors have fallen by the wayside.

I love it.  It is very similar to the smf.  I checked out this company and found that it is worth alot of money.  There are no other site that is similar.  Great job.  Now, back to the emerging medias.  I think I should ask how do I get assistance in determining a good niche to target in my field of study.
