iPad Mail - message blank, no attachments

The user runs Mail on an iPad, connected to an Exchange account.

All was fine for months.

Suddenly the body of every message appears blank and no attachments are available.

This question in Apple forums is similar, but there's no obvious solution:

I talked to the user over the phone.
Settings > Email Contacts and Calendar > Preview
 Adjusting the preview pane settings does not help.

Please advise.

Remote support is sensitive.  I never want to offend the user.  If I mention the restart a few times they might eventually go ahead a give it a try.  That's not always the case.  Fortunately this user got around to trying the restart.
