Need to find replacement laptop hard drive - Dell Vostro 1520

Hi Everyone - I need to find a replacement hard drive for a Dell Vostro 1520. Currently it has a Seagate ST9320423ASG which is a 320G 7200 RPM drive.

Any ideas? thanks!

You have a pretty specific hard drive.  Most 2.5" hard drives are low speed (that means 5400 rpms).  You can get a 5400rpm drive, it will perform that much slower than the existing hard drive spinning at 7200rpm.

I would look a getting a Seagate Momentus of the same size or a little larger - 500GB?.
Main thing is to check that it has the same features as the current hard drive - Seagate Momentus 7200.4 320GB 7.2K 2.5-inch SATA.

Alternatively, you could purchase Western Digital Scorpio hard drive or Hitachi Travelstar models....

Hope this helps,
Ian

As far as replacement hard drives go, pick up an equivalent 2.5" SATA hard drive from a local, reputable supplier and you should be right.

You could just get the same drive or same make/model just in a bigger size... not a complex request....something that should be a straight swap.

Cheers,
Ian

Note: You will need to rebuild your operating system if the original was the boot drive...

First, backup the data on the existing hard drive.  Then replace the existing hard drive with a new.  If there was not a problem with the old drive you could clone the drive using clonezilla (it is free and has support for many IO controllers that others do not including RAID configurations.  It can be found at: http://clonezilla.org/

If there was a problem with the old drive use a sata.ide to USB adapter and backup the data on the drive - don't forget your favorites and Outlook.pst files which are in different locations depending on the operating system.

Since, it is a Dell computer.  Use the Media the came with the system (if you got it) and boot to it by depressing F12 (one time boot) upon starting the laptop and choose - on board cd rom/DVD and depress any key to the boot this operating system cd or dvd.   Delete the existing partitions and create a new one and install the system frresh.  It will be a good idea to get new drivers if they exist and to copy the old drivers that are stored in C:\Dell\Drivers in the backup process as previously mentioned.  Then install drivers after the operating system installation is complete and do not forget to install available updates including service packs.  Then install your applications and restore the backed up data.

Good Luck - the fresh installation process will take at least two hours and clone will take about one hour total (maybe less).

In this times it is great to get a SSD .Great speed and the prices are dropping all the time.
Just weight you needs and get the appropriate SSD 128GB or greater.
If u have a lot of storage requirements u could always get an external USB 2.5" 0.5 Tb HDD to store what u need.

Get a SSD drive instead of these spinning drives. You will love it.
