asked on

view user names when document is opened

I have a strange issue where a staff member clicks on a document located on the server and when someone else clicks on it, it says that 'another user' is in the document.

However when another user is in the document, and someone clicks on it, it says the users name is in it.

I have confirmed with my client that their own name is in Files | Options | General in Excel and it is.

It affects different users using different excel documents, so it seems a hard to one to resolve!

you've lost me, too many uses of the work 'another user' lol

but if its a locking issue,

try unlocker to see who's got it open and to force close it.

Yeah some use excel 2007 and some use excel 2010.
All have the field populated with 'file, general, personalize your copy of office'
for example if user claire had a document open and someon tries to open the same document, a message appears saying that user claire is in it.

But if another user, for example rebecca, opens the same document (which no one has opened now), and another user tries to open the same document, a message says that 'another user' is in the document. No mention of rebecca
Thanks for the reply mrbullwinkle. My client just said there is a mixture of office 2007 and office 2010 on the user's machines.

I was thinking it could be version specific and your reply proves my theory.
Actually.  I've been seeing user names since Excel 2003.  My guess is that it is something else.

This thread here and the age verify that this has been around since Excel 2003.
