Disaster Recovery for Cisco MCS 7828 and Call Manager 6.0.1 / Unity Connection 2.0

I need some advice on disaster recovery for a Cisco MCS 7828, Call Manager 6.0.1, Unity Connection 2.1 system.

This system was installed about 5 years ago by a reseller. In a recent disaster planning audit, we discovered that the hardware is at End of Life and we do not have the original installation disks for the software. We are taking a backup of the system on a regular basis using the Cisco disaster recovery tools.

The problem is what happens if we experience one of more disks crashing and they have to be replaced?

We currently have no OS installation disks or Call Manager / Unity Connection installation disks to get the system back up to a point where we could restore the database and other information from our backup.

I would like to get some additional years out of this system (assuming the motherboard stays operational) but could use some advice on how to deal with the need for a complete "cold metal" restore of the OS software.

The DRS system won't provide the underlying OS/Application. Since it only contains your setup configuration, the installer DVD is required. I believe CM 6.0.1 maybe out there in the internet for illegal download..., just make sure it is exactly the same version as you are running. For example: 6.0.1.xxxx.x is differente than 6.0.1.xxxx-y, and you won't be able to restore to that version if the backup was taken from a different one.

Best thing is to place a DVD request from Cisco of course.

Finally, you may want to buy another disk drive like the ones currently running in that machine, pull out the secondary disk and insert a blank one so that the RAID card copies the information to the blank one. That way you will have disk with all the database. It is not as updated as a DRS backup, but will save you from a disaster scenario like the one described.

I think both run pretty good as a VM. If you have a weekend when you can take them down, do a clone using a Cold Boot cd. Then that way maybe they'll be hardware agnostic and you can put them together on a spare server.

I've done it before during a migration where I had to ship the actual server from NY to CA, so I basically left the VM in NY until I got the physical server in CA, but I didnt do the cold boot, I had the actual CDs and just restored from backup... I don't think it is part of your licensing agreement, but for me it was running just fine for a week and that's all I needed it for.

Turns out that our best option was to re-up on the maintenance contract for the 7828. Not what I wanted to do but it seems that was the best option. I am assuming that once I have all the renewals in place, I can get the backup software that I need.
