Facebook question - hiding a "like"

I'm not a facebook person even though I am on it and use it once or so a month.

I want to "like" a particular company (pram/pushchair manufacturer) but I dont believe such boring and unnoteworthy things should be appear on my facebook profile for the whole world and their dog to see that I have "liked" it or an interested in it.  I just want to receive their news updates and perhaps offers.

Is there a way of preventing people receiving emailing notifications of such likes that I have made as part of their updates?

So the question is actually two fold.  1. Can I ensure specific likes are not shown up and 2. Can I switch of activity broadcasts like the fantastic feature available in linkedIN (which I love and am a big fan of)?

Thx.
