upgrade exchange 2007 UM

Dear All,

I have a physical server installed dedicated for exchange 2007 UM in my network, I’m going to upgrade my exchange environment to exchange 2010 with the following configurations:
1-      Two VM’s for HUB/CAS
2-      Two VM’s for MB with DAG configuration.

I need to ask:
1-      Where I have to install the UM roles within the above design?
2-      How I can provide the high availability for UM roles?
3-      How I can migrate the current UM configuration to the new Exchange environment?

Thanks

You might want to read Exchange 2010 DAG on VMWARE and Microsoft stance on it.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/11/09/3411471.aspx

Also, UM by itself doesn't have any high availability provided, the only one that can be provided is to have a Cisco Call Manager infront of twin UM Servers and load balance the traffic.

so, you'll need to have twin UM Servers that'll host you're dial plans

can you please provide me more details for the UM high availability?

I wouldn't pretty much suggest to have availability on UM, unless it is deemed critical and important. Which system are you using for telephony?

Hello,

The link posted above re: Microsoft's stance on using DAG with VMWare is out of date. As of Exchange 2010 SP1, Microsoft now fully supports running DAG on clustered hypervisors, including the use of VMotion and DRS.

Keep this in mind when you're designing Exchange on VM

In the case of Microsoft Hyper-V, the live migration option is supported, but the quick migration option is not supported. With Hyper-V, it’s important to be aware that, when you select the Move operation on a virtual machine, the default behavior is actually to perform a quick migration. To stay in a supported state with Exchange SP1 and Exchange SP2 DAG members, it’s critical that you use the live migration option, as shown in the following figure.

@JJ Thanks for pointing out the change in stance of MS.

Exchange_GeekCommented:
I'd suggest place it on hub/cas and let aside Mailbox role.
