XP operation system won't connect over the network to SQL Server 2008 RS express

Good morning experts. My Windows 7 based PC's will connect perfectly to my SQL 2008 R2 express database. I do however have one legacy XP machine that I also need to connect to it and I am getting this error: "the database could not be opened using this username and password."

Good question xmlmagician. How can I verify?
my apologies i might have jumped the gun as we have a setup in my organisation where we access an SQL back end with MS access at the front.

what program do you use to access the date on the SQL server?
