CISCO 6500 INTER VLAN ROUTING....???

Just notices that a 6500 running

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) s72033_rp Software (s72033_rp-IPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.2(18)SXF11, R
ELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

This box allows inter-Vlan routing even when the Vlans are not places in any Routing process

Simply create the VLANS and the Vlan virtual interfaces, apply IP addresses and then ping the respective Vlan sourcing from another Vlan and it will work....I find this odd since neither Vlan was placed into a routing protocol.

Any ideas?

Since the 6500 is actually a Switch does the same apply... I agree that a Layer 3 Switch is actually a Router but I thought I would ask the question regardless...thanks

J
The 6500 is a layer 3 switch which means it has built in routing capabilities.
yes, same applies to this instance as Ken said above.
I might just point out that not all cat 6k are layer 3, but yours obviously is L3.  The L3 ability sits in the MSFC daughtercard on the supervisor.
