RHEL5 64 bit machine becomes unreachable and shows blank screen on the console

We have RHEL5 64 bit machines, being accessed through SSH. All of the sudden then became unreachable (ping failures) and not able connect. When checked the console, it was blank.  After powercycle they came up. Have seen this couple of times.

    check log files (e.g. /var/log/messages) for possible kernel panic, network problem or other messages near the time of the system becoming unresponsive.

    Setup a cron job that collects system info, top for process running, vmstat for memory usage, iostat for io, and others.
    This way you could determine whether the system freezes, or gets overloaded leading to o responsive state.
