Adding new domain controller to existing domain 2003

Hello my question is for a school,

I have an existing domain, that has 30 DC's. We have a new site, and i need to add a domain controller to it for the student domain. It is really a domain trust where there are 2 domains at each school, one for students one for teachers. There is already one for teachers set up at this site, but i need to add the student one. I know how to run DCpromo etc, already have dns installed on it. What do i need to do to the domain, or forest to prep it?

Are you wanting to create a child domain or a totally separate forest that will trust the teachers but not vice-versa?

there is already a child domain, the student domain. So im just adding another DC to it, more specifically there are 30 teacher DC's for the teacher domain, and 29 student DC's for the student domain. My adding this DC for students will make it 30 even. i know how to run dcpromo im just worried that i have to do the adprep forestprep stuff ive never done that

Is this new domain controller running the same version of Windows as the other domain controllers, or is it the first domain controller of a new version?  I.e. is everything else Server 2003 and this one is 2008 R2?

60 DCs. That seems to be a rather large environment.

Are you the only admin there?

With 30 DCs for each domain, I assume you have 15 sites or more?  OR you have 60,000 users.  If not, you are over complicating the domain(s) and spending money on software licenses unnecessarily.

As for what you have to do to add another DC?  If none of the existing DCs are the same version of Windows as the one you are trying to add, then you need to run ADPREP and update the AD schema... otherwise, just run DCPROMO.

Nope no new version of Windows, sounds good I'll just continue with dcpromo, yes I'm only admin

You're the only admin for 15 sites and/or 60,000 users?  My gosh, do you ever sleep?

Or, put another way, WHY do you have 30-60 Domain Controller?  That's insane.  If you're the only admin, then you're domain is likely under 1000 users/5 sites.  You only need - indeed, you only WANT 2 DC per domain per site with 2000 or fewer people.

If you are not promoting a new version of windows as a domain controller, then no forest preparation or domain preparation is needed prior to running DCPromo.

Hi Leew,

it is definitely difficult there is a guy im training for jr sys admin, and some other desktop support reps (4) who are good desktop guys they just dont have experience with servers. Its not as bad as it sounds though, there are 2 DC's for each school site, one for students one for faculty. There are about 15,000 students and 3,000 staff all together
