WordPress - cannot install plugins, access denied

I am working with a site I did not set up and needed to install a backup plugin. When I went to do so, I received the message that the installation had failed because the directory could not be created. I FTP'd to the site and tried creating the directory manually and discovered that all WordPress folders (wp-content, wp-admin, wp-includes) are write protected. I cannot CHMOD these folders via FTP or the servers cPanel. I am at a loss as to how to make these files writeable again.

My user account is an administrator with full priviliges in WordPress and on the server. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how to address the issue?

Is it your server? If not, contact the owner of the server and ask to change what you want.
Hello.
Your ftp account doent have the right to chmod the files? on a default installation that i just did these folders are 0755 on permissions.
try logging in with a filezilla client ( http://filezilla-project.org/download.php ) and after your login try rightclick on the folders, selece file permisions  and set them on 0755.
please feedback your results

Call up your host and have them fix your permissions. You should be able to change folder / file CHMOD permissions with FTP clients such as file zilla. If not, host should fix it for you.
