Upgrade Oracle Client to 11g R2 on 1000 Windows PC's

We are required by an application upgrade to update the Oracle client on all computers to version 11g R2 (11.2.0.3). Currently our PC's are running different versions of the Oracle client - 9.2, 10.1, 10.2, & 11.1. The larger majority are 9.2 & 10.2. I understand we need to do a complete removal of the old client and then install the new one. How can we best automate this process? Our computers are spread across a large number of sites.Ideally we would like to do one site (50 -100 computers) at a time. All computers are running Windows XP or 7.

Thanks.

To remove the old versions (never a 'complete' removal no matter what):

Delete the install folder and 'C:\program files\oracle'
Delete the registry entry: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE

Can you use the Oracle Instant Client?

It is the easiest to install.

If you ned to complete, I would set up a response file and do a silent install.

How do you manage these machines? Do you have any means of remote installation? Here's some details about creating a response file: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32007/advance.htm

That is the 11gR1 docs and it likely hasn't changed but since they wanted 11gR2, here is that doc:

use a deployment tool like landesk

> create a package in the deployment tool for
  >> deleting the old client
  >> install the new client
  >> change configuration like tns_admin location

@slightwv - Nice catch :)

We do have a means of remotely managing all computers, actually w/ LANDesk. Using a response file for the install makes sense. Has anyone ever created a script (or LANDesk package) that can remove all the different versions of the Oracle client?

well, the problem is getting everything which uses the oracle client to stop running
>> every month or so, something pops up

the last thing was a app which periodically ran
at startup of the install package, nothing was running but
a few seconds later an app using oracle client started (and runs for about 30 mins collecting data and sending it to oracle)
so the install failed here

currently for ora 8,9,10 we use the delete, clean registry, delete services etc
the 11 has a new delete exe

but as stated above, there is no absolute script which will work in 100% of the cases

Thanks for all of your input. Looks like we'll create a script to manually delete the old client and response file to install the new one.
