Mac booting off backup external hard drive

Dont know much about macs.

Have hard drive in usb drive for time machine.

When you reboot, it hangs at white screen.  Unplug usb drive and it boots up ... Trying to boot off backup drive? How do you tell it to only try booting from internal drive?

Reboot holding down the option key. This will bring up the boot picker and you can select which drive to boot from.

Then, once booted pull down the Apple Menu to System Preference and go to the Startup Disk pane and select the internal hard drive as the startup disk.

Thanks.  I skipped the first part and while machine is running, went to press.  Highlighted hard drive.

How do you save?
Is this ok ? It's doing some other things so I can't reboot right now.
Is that normal to default to external drives?

It is not normal to default to the external drive. After selecting the hard drive in the preference pane, click on the lock at the bottom left to lock the panel and prevent further changes.
