Secure web service

I have a web service which URL is visible in the web page source using ajax to access it.

How do I keep someone from typing in the url and running it in their browser and scraping my database content.

Surely there is a way to disable the user interface when you type in the service url? I don't want them to be able to pass variables against my methods.
