Changing page numbering in Word 2007

We have a Word document that was sent to us in two files.
Total number of pages - 175.
We have a table of contents with page numbers i, ii, iii, iv.
Then the main document starts with page numbers starting with "1" at the bottom/ center of each page.
The page numbering works great up to page 37 - at which point the second file was cut & pasted below - but the page numbering jumps to 41  - missing 38 - 40.
How can I force the numbering to start with 38?

Couple things to check

Changes in page numbers can occur when you have defined a section break.  If you show turn on paragraph marks and other hidden characters you should be able to see where a section break occurs.

if you position your cursor in the footer of page 41... then make sure that "Link to Prevous" is selected.

After that... highlight the actual page number on page 41... and right click and select format page numbers.... and make sure that "continue from previous section is selected".

Thanks so much.  It took me a bit of hunting and pecking around, but it ALL worked!  Off and running on the document again.
