when I look at the log file I see " Error: 17113, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2012-08-31 08:34:58.09 Server      Error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) occurred while opening file 'e:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' to obtain configuration information at startup. An invalid startup option might have caused the error. Verify your startup options, and correct or remove them if necessary.

How are you trying to 'open the sql server'?  What program are you using?  Where is the SQL Server located and are you on that machine when you're trying to open it or are you on a different machine?
