Sharepoint & Javascript Form Field Autocomplete

I have been trying to create a custom form on Sharepoint Designer (2007) for a list on our sharepoint site.

The list has a series of customised forms that list out different fields for the appropriate users to complete.

A simple example:
End user will click on add new entry, will get a  customised form that collects information for feilds 1,2 & 3.

Sp workflow sends an email to responsible team containging a link to form #2

Responsible team follow link to form # 2 - which contains fields 1,2,3 as text and 4,5,6 as input values

So Form # 2 as in the example above is what is in question here, and is a custom sharepoint form created using SPD.

I need the data completed field (Field 6 ) to auto complete to todays date. But as the list entry was added by the end user in the first point, I can't use the sharepiont default field values.

therefore I've seen the method of using javascript here: Javascript in Sharepoint

I assume this code needs to be inserted into the source code of a content editor web part to work, but can't see how I get the <<FIELD DISPLAY NAME>> and <<QUERYSTRING VARIABLE NAME>> from sahrepoint designer.

Also id rather just use todays date than passing values through the url for this purpose - which I assume is possible.

If anybody knows how to find these elements, can confirm that the approach is correct and / or knows how to adjust the script so that using the URL is avoided your help would be much appreciated!
