table of contents

I have Words 2010 and I am just wondering how to setup a table of content with the numbering format like:
     2.1 etc...

When you create your document.... the easiest way is to use styles.

For exampe:

1. On this line... apply style of "Heading 1"
1.1 On this line.... apply style of "heading 2"
1.1.1 On this line.... apply styhle of "heading 3"

and so on....

Once you have applied styles to each of your outline elements... then go to the  references tab.  The top right icon on the toolbar should be table of contents.

From that point just select the style of table of contents that you wish to use and that is it.

Here is an example of a TOC that I created following those steps:

1      1st Level Heading       2
1.1      2nd  level Heading      2
1.1.1      3rd Level      Heading   2

Note if you don't like the font size / color or whatever of a particular Heading x.... you can customize the styles to suit your needs.

-- Note.... I said in my earlier post... top right.... should have said top left.

OK. Now when I go from 1. to 1.1, there is a huge space in between. I tried to set the paragraph to single but it did not fix it. How do you fix that? Thx
Ken ButtersCommented:
Do you mean huge space in the Table of contents or huge space in the body of the document?

check the following:

On the Page Layout tab.... in the paragraph section (contains indent and spacing).... select the little arrow in the lower right corner of the section... (see attached picture)

anyway... once you click on the arrow... make sure that spacing before... and spacing after is set to zero.
