How Citrix XenApp 6.5 Published Application logon process work?

Hello there,

I would like to know if there are any docos/URl's that will drill down and explain the whole process of XenApp 6.5 Published Application, from the time user double clicks on the Published icon and the application launch.

This will help me a lot in understanding the process.

We have XenApp 6.5 farm with 2 x ZDC (Load Balanced via Netscaler) and 2 x WI (Load Balanced via Netscaler) and implemented Citrix Receiver for users across the network and for external users access via Citrix Netscaler Access Gateway.

Please advise.

Thanks and Regards

Since you are using Netscaler AGW, some more additional policies or scans will be performed when you login. But other processes remain the same. Also accessing application through Citrix receiver or citrix client are same.

If you have specified authentication to happen in NS, additional authentication can happen on the netscaler device also.  If two factor authentication is used in NS like RSA, this can also take place before WI authentication. It all depends how you have configured. You can also directly forward the requests to WI for authentication.

External users coming from Internet may get policies applied from AGW if specified. If a user is connecting from a Kiosk in Airport, then AGW will scan the end point devices to see if it's a corporate machine. If not, it can restrict local drive access printing etc, which will be performed during End-point analysis. Also if Netscaler also check for the least busy WI server if it also acts as a load-balancer. It can also act as application accelerator etc.

For internal users not coming thru NS AGW device, the above comment from elchuru is fine.

I wanted to know what happens in the steps 3, 4 and 5 when user clicks on the Citrix Published App/Deskop icons from his Desktop with Citrix Receiver:

My understanding is that ICA file is returned to Citrix Receiver in the client machine? and then it uses the ICA file to launch the connection?
If so where will be the ICA file stored during that duration in client machine?

    Please advise.

    1. The XML broker translates this host ID into it’s IP address by searching the Local Host Cache.
    2. The IP address is then provided to Web Interface (this completes the application resolution).
    3. Web Interface uses this IP address to create the ICA file.
    4. The ICA file is then returned to Web browser on the client machine.
    5. Citrix online Web plug-in uses the ICA file to launch an ICA connection to the least loaded XenApp server.
    6. The XenApp server launches the application for the user.
