I dabble with SQL Server 2008 R2.

How can I determine what service packs, hot fixes, and cummulative updates my current state of SQL Server has?

You can find installed updates in your Control Panel/Programs/Programs and Features/Installed Updates.

To determine current version of SQL, see article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321185.

Help/About of SQL Management Studio will also give you the current installed version numbers.
