If this is windows 7 64 bit, try rolling back adobe flash player to an earlier version, this may solve the problem. I have had issues with both IE 8 and 9 freezing when I had the latest version of Adobe flash player installed. First unistall your current version then roll back to an earlier version fo flash player. The newest version has bugs in it.

Internet Explorer 8 Tools Grayed Out,

that usually means that a group or local policy has been applied. Are you a member of a domain? if not what antivirus/malware tools have you got installed?

It's not a member of a domain.
AVG full version is installed (w/firewall)
I'll check Flash..

It was Flash.  I uninstalled and installed the *now latest version* (just on a whim) and everything is OK.

Thanks for the points, I ran into the resolution by accident, and I was experiencing the exact same issue on six workstations that I have recently deployed with windows 7 64 bit. When ever I installed the most recent adobe flash player, the end user complained about very slow or freezing IE, browsing the internet worked fine using firefox. I rolled back flashplayer and everything worked fine.

As I mentioned, it appears the *now* latest version has overcome this issue.
