Need a software design idea to work with a barcode scanner

The simple idea is to scan an item ( barcode scan ). The scanned item and the quantity ( scan once means qty = 1) will need to be recorded realtime or ASAP into a database.

I need to design the database UI to capture scanned item and quantity.

Platform Windows. Development tools are .Net ( 4.0 ) , LAN based.

I need ideas for a real time or otherwise.

a Typical scenario would be someone going around the warehouse with a barcode scanner and scanns items. The user then expects the scanned items/quantities to be saved in a database.

all ideas are appreciated.

Barcode scanner acts as an USB keyboard that types numbers to host. You can attach raspbery pi with rechargable battery and wifi and have it realtime...

There are many hardware solutions for WinCE, even free as GPL barcode scanning for android with camera.

Normally one walks around and docks the device and computer then reads (SQLITE/CSV) databaase from the remote.

Really depends on your time/money balance rate...

Hi gheist,

Thanks for this. Can you possibly elaborate a bit on the technologies that you specified with (some links) pls?

in addition - can you clarify this if you can ?
This is my understanding
If for example I need to extract the information ( item# and quantity ) when the scanner scans an item, I will still need to work with the particular software ( scanner software ) to interface with it ? My requirement is not simple - I am after a wireless solution. So my belief is that there are no standards that Scanner manufacturers follow when they output the scanned data. That means I cannot really create a software to interface with onc scanner and expect it to work on another.
Am I right ?

Nope - scanner microcode does the OCR part, you get just a keyboard input without getting an idea if it was keyboard or barcode scanner or IR remote or mute button on webcam.

In case of Android: https://code.google.com/p/zxing/ (open-source OCR library to turn a camera on the phone into a scanner sensor)
