Regarding the Java runtime Next-Generation Plug-in feature: it is my understanding that eventually the option to disable it will be removed. Can someone show me where this information is published? Is there a date or release number associated with this?

Thanks.

Why would they remove the option to disable something that is constantly having to be patched because of security holes?
By it's definition a plug-in is something you want or don't want.
Where have you read this?

That's just it, I'm sure I read it somewhere but I can't find it now.

In my case I have an applet that only works when it's disabled, so I'm trying to forecast when and how we might need to modify the applet to work either with it, or migrate to something else like maybe AJAX.

I found this, though not terribly official. Scroll down to the "Warning from java console".

But thats nothing to do with not being able to disable it, it's just saying IE will default to the 7u2 plugin, but Java can still be disabled.

True, but I was just pointing out the message that the "classic" plugin will eventually be removed.

So I basically answered my own question. The Java 7 console displays a warning when the classic plugin is used indicating this functionality will be removed in the next major release,  presumably Java 8. I guess that's proof enough for me.
