I have a new VAIO laptop with Windows 7 Pro (64 bits) installed. I am trying to change video settings in Windows Media Player by adjusting parameters of brightness and contrast however nothing change. This issue is observed with all types of viedos played in Windows Media Player including avi, wmv, ... etc formats.

Hi  megraa0b
sorry don't know why no one has offered any suggestions.
I just received an email about your neglected question.
I'm using WMP 12 in windows 7
So you drop a video on, press play,
then rightclick the screen go to enhancements or video settings
then SRS WOW effects
at the top of this little menue is two arrows, one pointing left one pointing right
click on the right now you see video settings
drag the bar to change brightness etc,
While playing it?
I am able to adjust while playing or paused but try it when paused
Make sure you are in Now Playing and move the bar slowly incase it is a video card problem.
I installed K-lite pack to cover all my needs
check the faq and decide if you need the basic  one
look under the Video display issues
http://codecguide.com/faq.htm
Test playing your video in media player classic home cinema
or VLC

Dark movieLightenedNew systems may need a codec pack installed
being a laptop please use AC when playing movies just incase
Which direct x version do you have, it could be hardware acceleration problems.
go to start orb>run>type dxdiag press enter
dxdiag

Thank you Merete for reply. I followed your instructions but no success as shown in attached snapshots. I already have K-Lite Codec Pack and DirectX Ver 11.

In addition to what I mention above, VLC has no problem and I manage to adjust video settings while the Media Player Classic does have the same problem of Media Player !! Strange, isn't it?

Hi  megraa0b
We'll need to drill down a few things.
You have a new Laptop so it could just be some settings need to be activated.
I have a desktop windows 7 x 32.
So you have this problem with all video in both WMP 12 and MPCHC? but not VLC?
But mainly WMV?
Yes that's puzzling, must be related to codecs possibly and or your video card settings.
That can influence brightness.
WMV is a propriety codec owned by Microsoft.
And hense of course WMP 12 will check it out.
All windows updates installed?

Your screenshots  of the video it looks pretty good as is.
Can you adjust to darkness just to confirm it can be adjusted?
Are the players in full screen?
WMP 12 I find won't allow adjustment when in full screen.
Take out of full screen and just drag the corner out to enlarge a bit.
Could you provide your system specs.
How much ram.
Video chip and a year of driver
Are you the default administrator in this windows?

The codec pack K-lite you installed was it for windows 7 x 64?
Where did you download it?
Check your settings against mine for MPCHC,
MPCHC video output settingsWMP 12 performance settings
Performance settings WMP 12

I found a possible solution megraa0b
The problem seems to be related to the Laptop keyboard hotkeys program
'Vaio Event Service'
makes sense
Apparently it is the program that allows you to use keyboard 'hotkeys' with
the 'Fn' button to control volume, brightness etc.
Turning this off  dis-ables some of the hotkeys, regardless if you use it or not.
How to disable

Thank you Merete, I managed to resolve the problem. The magic key was in Intel Graphics Control Panel. I just changed the Standard Colors Correction Settings from Driver to Application as shown below.

Dear experts,
I have an identical problem with the similar device (Sony Vaio F-Series (VPCF236FM) Intel Core i7-2670QM @ 2.20GHz, 8GB RAM) running WIN 7 HP (64-bit), with different Graphics adapter NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M.
I've tried every option offered on this thread with no effect on my Windows Media Player Video Settings problem. Changing settings in NVIDIA Control Panel will not solve problem either. The interesting thing is that every time I reinstall the driver through Device Manager - Driver Properties, it will (for some unexplainable reason) fix the problem and it will work for some time until laptop goes into sleep mode or gets restarted. And then again the Video Settings (Brightness, Contrast, Hue etc.) will not work. Sometimes adjusting setting on NVIDIA control panel will have effect on a video (wmv) while playing simultaneously on Windows Media Player, but again only until the moment when I have to turn it off or it goes to sleep mode...
I really hope you can help.
