Need a solution to backup a large amount of data and files

Hi guys,

Need your input to help with backup solution for a large 15TB 40mil files volume.  The system is running on the physical Dell R710 with storage attached to Dell EqualLogics PS6100.
The issue now we do not have a backup of this volume so need to back it up asap now.  And then design an appropriate backup going forward.
What would be the solution?  Please advice.

Thanks!!

If you need an immediate backup, a fast solution would be spanning the backup accross multiple forms of media (bluray, external harddrives, etc) to get something to recover from.

For long term, I would suggest getting a larger SAN but there's a lot more to it.

Are you archiving a majority of the 15tb or is it all live data?

Out of the live data, how much changes daily/weekly and how frequently would you need to backup the live data?

edit: Just in response to using online backups, 15TB at even a 20MBps upload is over a week to upload... not a likely solution.

For long term data protection for Volumes containing milliions of files. You should be looking at a solution which provide Imgae or block level backup.

If you use traditional agent backup for these many number of files, Scan phase itself would take hours.

we use CommVault. There are many enterprise solutions out in the market.

15TB = 10 * LTO-5 (Uncompressed) and 30-36 hours. I you manage to get any compression it will improve these numbers.

If the data is Archival Storage (not needing periodic updating)
Archive System storage capacity from 4.5TB to 65TB.

Blu-Ray at 4.5MB/s write speed (Data) is going to take a month

So Dell Servers + Dell EqualLogic storage.  Can these handle that much data for backups?

@ connollyg
"Blu-Ray at 4.5MB/s write speed (Data) is going to take a month "

@ 14 times it is 504 MB/s write speed
The  Archival Storage can be done on HDDs or SSDs which is much faster...

But the question of :
"If the data is Archival Storage (not needing periodic updating)"
Remains un-answered...

it's more like archival.  mostly adds, few deletes (except in times of screw ups)

Is that a write speed?

ooops
504 Mbit/s (63 MB/s)

So can Dell solution servers with EqualLogics help in my case?

Gerald ConnollyCommented:
Even if it is 63MB/sec WRITE speed, its still going to take 3 days! The LTO option is still significantly faster and probably more reliable too.

Are we talking about tapes here?  D2D only please.

Gerald ConnollyCommented:
Yes, LTO is tape.

So if you have 15TB to Backup you need another 15TB to back it up, either by adding another set of disks to your existing system or via a NAS box. The NAS box route will allow a backup strategy going forward especially if you use one that can DeDupe your data e.g. http://opendedup.org/nasapp (I have no experience of this software i am just using it as an example) or look at Dell, HP, IBM, NetApp, Quantum etc etc for a more supportable (but higher cost) devices.
