SQL 2008 R2 CALs - how to license a terminal server

Scenario - App is installed on a Windows 2008 RDS server.  There could be 5 simultaneous users of this app.  The app connects to a dedicated SQL 2008 R2 server.  The question is how to license the users on RDS.  How many CALs are needed?

Choice 1 - 1 x SQL 2008 R2 device CAL is needed to license for all RD users.

Choice 2 - 5 x SQL 2008 R2 users CALs are needed for each RD user.

choice 1 if per user, choice 2 if per device CAL

you need as many SQL licenses as you have users that will connect to published application. this is terminal server (remote desktop services) and you cannot use 1 device license and you'd be covered. You need license for every device/user that directly or indirectly (in your case) connects to SQL server.

So if you have 5 users, than you need 5 SQL licenses (and 5 for XenApp and 5 for RDS). If you have 30 users, but only 5 will be concurrent, you still need 30 SQL licenses (and 30 for RDS and 5 for XenApp)
