I have connected to SQL2008 table within excel and when I update a cell I expect the SQL field to also be updated. I have update, insert permissions selected for that table.

    You can't do that easily.

The most simple way in Excel is to have a stored procedure on your server - and send your update query through the stored procedure using some vba.  This also very much depends on your table having a unique key and being set up well
