Exchange 2010 Backups & Database Maintenance

I have an exchange 2010 server and am having issues with the performance of the backup jobs (Backup Exec 2012)

The Database Maintenance on Exchange is scheduled from 2:00am to 6:00am. My backup job kicks off at midnight. Eventually the two are runing simultaneously and it causes my backup job to run like mud dipped snail.

I am trying to find how long the exchange maintenance takes so I can work the times around each other. The exchange maintenance schedules are set for a 4 hour window.   I wouldlike run the backups overnight as there is very little activity going on. The questions I am seeking answers to are:

Does the scheduled maintenance need the full 4 hours?
How can I find out how long the scheduled maintenance actually takes to run?
What impact does running the backups during the day have?
What impact does running the maintenance during the day have?

Any recommendations?

Thanks.  I have read that article and it explains a lot but it still doesn't answer questions 3 and 4.
Exchange 2010 24×7 Online Defragmentation and Online Database Scanning
http://www.shudnow.net/2009/10/25/exchange-2010-24x7-online-defragmentation-and-online-database-scanning/

Not sure if you read the above a good one ... and let me try to answer your queries :)

Does the scheduled maintenance need the full 4 hours? - Depends on the Database size.

How can I find out how long the scheduled maintenance actually takes to run? - 700 for Starting and 701 when Completed

What impact does running the backups during the day have? - Server performance and availability can be affected and deteriorate ..... can affect users Mailbox access and delay in emails .... many others as well

What impact does running the maintenance during the day have? - it is a very sensitive process even any process can terminate it so thats why its never scheduled in day\production time as it also scans the DB making access a bit slow

If Online Maintenance doesnt complete you wont get White space in the Database

Rancy,  Thank you for the answers. Very helpfull in determinig my window for backups.

I have since taken the DB offline and ran a hard repair on it (eseutil /p). The database has since been mounted again and I had the same issue wth the backups.  They failed due to a consistency check failure.  I have placed a a call to symantec support on this. Hopefully they will not come back with "It's your database that has a problem and we can't help you untill you fix it."

Worst case scenario..... I create a new DB and migrate to it.
If we have the leverage why not create a new DB move mailboxes and take a backup .... as many a times the vendor will say what you spoke ..... so why waste my money rather let me try this and that and keep them as last resort :)
