Excel formula problem with alphabet

I got one cell with text "N/A" (cell A1), Why my formula =if(A1>300%, "Yes", "No") will show Yes? it is an alphabet......pls help

alphabet>number

To avoid that, use N()
 =if(N(A1)>300%, "Yes", "No")

N turns alphabet into 0
