WORD 2010. Why do I get a edge to edge line?

When I type 10, 20, 40 or whatever number of underscore characters, word converts those to one LONG line from edge to edge. I want ONLY the length that I am typing to show. How do I change this?

BINGO!! That did the job  for me. Thanks for your exact and speedy help!!
I believe that once Word converts to an edge to edge line, if you press ctrl-z (undo), it will give you exactly what you typed.
