How do I create a status monitor for end users to know when a particular service is down in the helpdesk? I have searched the web and the closest thing I could find similar to what i want was the Google Apps Status Page

Any help is much appreciated..

How is the helpdesk designed and accessed... is it database driven? You could create a cron job that runs a script to tests each service. If the result comes back and the service is down then you simply take the appropriate action to let people know. It really all depends on how your helpdesk operates and how it reports back to the end user.
